Nīkau was born in Wellington, New Zealand, and raised on the Kāpiti Coast. He is Māori, of Ngāti Toa descent, and Pākehā, of Welsh Descent.
Nīkau attended Kāpiti College, and following high school lived for some time in Klosterneuburg, Austria. He discovered a love of film and music at college, winning several local film competitions and playing in many student ensembles. Nīkau is also a keen barbershop singer, and was a member of world-class men's chorus Vocal FX.
Nīkau has been involved in several projects with the Māoriland Charitable Trust such as the Through Our Lens programme, taking film education to the youth of the Pacific Islands, and an educational film about Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the Wellington region. Nīkau is very interested in other cultures and musical traditions, and speaks English, German and Māori.
Nīkau holds a Degree Music, majoring in Composition with a specialisation in Film Scoring from Te Kōkī - The New Zealand School of Music.
